.CENT Spring/Summer 2010 Issue

Apr 30, 2010

Photobucket

.CENT
is an international, biannual, style publication, distributed across 11 countries. Past editors have included musician and producer Andrew Weatherall, fashion designer Roland Mouret and product designer Sam Hecht. For the Spring/Summer 2010 Issue, Keith Reilly, (Creative Director of Club fabric and matter) is the guest editor, so expect a dynamic range of topics out of his theme Sense of purpose.

Even though we are miles away from london, we are still a big fan of him. A quote of him from the following 2006 article speaks volume of the belief and commitment that his team has to club policy and forward-thinking music.

Madonna’s not been turned away three times, that’s a load of nonsense, she hasn’t, but we have refused to cater for what she asked for,” Keith explained.

She wanted to come here [Fabric] with then of her own security plus a big entourage and take over half the VIP lounge. I don’t want that. I’m not going to displace our regulars. What’s more important to me than Madonna is the spotty faced kid from Norwich who’s fucking cycled down here for the club. That’s actually happened, someone cycled here all the way from Norwich. He came for the music and he’s more important to me than her, because she wasn’t coming here to listen to the music; the only reason she wanted that big entourage was because it was all about making a big appearance and entrance. Look at me. Other people have come down here and wandered round the club, everyone from Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bono and Keither Sutherland, they didn’t give a shit and they had no problems - Via Inthemix.com.au

Brendon P's Notion Of Club Music In Singapore

Mar 8, 2010

Photobucket

While gawking at the Blue Steel models of a men's magazine, we chanced upon an article featuring our local DJ hero, Brendon P. The following is an excerpt from his telling observation of the club music-scape in Singapore.

Electro, Top 40s and hip hop are now the mainstay in many clubs and bars. Even many trance acts are moving towards remixes of Top 40 hits, like Tiësto working with the Black Eye Peas. I'm not saying this is neccessarily bad for the clubbing scene in Singapore - the underground sounds of house, breaks, techno and trance would not be possible without the 'overground' mainstream sounds of disco, pop and rock that are sampled. But when club owners and investors get too caught up with the dollars and cents of a night out, it means the DJs have to keep their music safe. And that means clubbers are likely to find the exact same music everywhere they go - Pg 50, AUGUST MAN Magazine, March 2010

Besides hosting a monthly Fixation show at meshradio, the spin-doctor produced his own tracks too. More on Brendon P here.

Rebranding Breaks Music In Australia

Jan 11, 2010

For those who wonder about the current state of Breaks scene in Australia, it has been given a facelift and even new names!

It’s become a disposed word. It was exciting but it’s not the new thing anymore and the sort of kids that are going out now, they want to do their own thing. They want to experience their own style of music. So, we’ve moved on from that, we’re doing a whole new thing now and so whatever you call it, it doesn’t really matter that much to me. At the end of the day people are in a club having a good time and whatever you’re calling the music is neither here nor there to be honest - Nick Thayer , Australia’s leading Exponent of Breaks

What's Da Point Of Playing Pre-Mixed CDs?

Nov 1, 2009

Read this opinion piece on Knowledge Magazine Blog about DJs who play pre-mixed CDs at gigs. The furore started because of a certain Printer Jam producer who was caught in the act during one of his gigs.

Unless there comes a time when punters and promoters will explicitly choose to pay a producer to stand behind the decks and hit 'play', it's disrespectful to represent yourself to paying people to be something you're not - The Lost Art Of DJing

Peter Hook Admits To Signature Forgery

Oct 8, 2009

Hooky is desperate for $$, how low can he go?

There's some guy in the Northern Quarter who had 'An Ideal For Living' up and it was signed by all four members of the band and dated. I went in and said, have you not noticed that the date is after Ian died? He went, Oh no! It was me, I did them as a joke! In very poor taste. It was up there for £200, so my name is now mud among collectors. Bernard [Sumner]'s signature is much more valuable than mine, because he never signed anything! And I did have a reputation for doing Ian Curtis's autograph for a long time - Peter Hook's Interview on Xfm Radio

Something About Warm-Up DJs

Sep 24, 2009

An interesting article at RA for those who have yet to grasp the job of warm-up DJs!

But there is more to opening a room than just keeping the tempo under 124 bpm and playing deep music. The signature of a great opener is defined by a devotion to the music he or she is playing. As Lawler explains, "you can tell when an opener is someone that has just gone onto Beatport's Top 100 [to buy their] Deep House [tracks] and is trying to do it, as opposed to someone who loves and collects the music they are playing. You can always hear passion in a DJ's set."

Death to CD Promo

Sep 6, 2009

We should all support the death of CD format and rest assure, it does not signal the death of the music industry. In fact, we are starting to reduce gross wastage and save the environment.

I recently went to see the film the ‘Age of Stupid’ which neatly bundles up all the ecological arguments and makes you realise that we really do have to start changing the way we do things immediately. On the way home it occurred to me (during my thoughts about self powering lampposts and night vision glasses) that we need to do what we can as soon as we can (and not be disheartened when we discover we left the basement light on). We are the privileged members of the globe and we have a duty to do this. So the next day I had a think about what we could change quickest - Gavin O’Shea, CEO of Lo Recordings

Proving to the skeptics that free downloads do not always mean lost sales, Croydon dubstep producer, Skream has just picked up a Gold disc from Polydor Records for his remix of La Roux's In For The Kill. Curious to know how the tune climbed its way up to hit 400 000 sales, here's a legit snippet of the massive anthem from NME blog.

The Story Of Another Club Owner With Little Interest In Music

Jun 30, 2009

Now you know why disenchanted youth rather stay home, drink soda pop, watch youtube videos than check out the music at the most hype-up club in the world!

The Ministry of Sound opened in 1991. I had worked in the City after leaving Eton and put up £500,000 for the venture. I wasn't so interested in the dance-music scene, but it was beginning to take off in Britain and the project seemed a sound commercial proposition - Mail Online

Britain's Got DJ Talents : Buy Your Own Music & Earn Royalties From Itunes

Jun 17, 2009

For the extreme chart-watchers out there, maybe it's time to appreciate music by the ears than what's on the top of the billboard? It's all Maths for the gang who created the hype in their music whilst earning a cool 6-figure royalties along the way. If anyone knows the identity of these British talents, please share.

Starting last August, they used music-distribution service Tunecore to upload their albums to iTunes.

Stolen credit-card details were then used to rack up massive downloads of their music - some £450,000 worth - that suggested the "artistes" were exploding in popularity - Asiaone News
