South West Drum & Bass Awards 2008

Apr 6, 2009

Scoop03_apr09

For the newbies, this is a lesser known event compared to Breakspoll. However, for those who are looking for a whole spectrum of breakbeat to celebrate the Ist May 2009, you may want to head over to Eden Project, St Austell, Cornwall to get the finest funk, drum and bass, breaks, jazz, hip hop, soul, latino and arts. The South West Drum n Bass Awards are co-promoted by Darren Bason and Nigel Muntz through the 247 Magazine connection. It started as a Drum n Bass polling event to recognise hardworking individuals, especially popular MC, DJ talents and those who put out the best nights to create the lively scene at the South West Side of UK ( mainly the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Bristol). To ensure a fair and true representation of the best in their scene, the awards are compiled from votes of people who check out the music and the different nights across the region.

With the success of the breaks room at their 2007 event, a new Breaks awards was introduced. This year, in association with Streetwise Music, their breaks resident DJs are hosting the first South West Breakbeat Awards alongside the event. More of the line-up and joint forces here.

[ Review ] Various - Transparent Sound Remixes

Apr 4, 2009

Review01_apr09TRACKLISTING

1. 2 Headed Monster (Fine Cut Bodies Remix)
2. Electro Mouse (Fine Cut Bodies Remix)
3. Cider Club (Error Response Remix)

WHO

Transparent Sound is essentially a musical collaboration between Martin Brown and Orson Bramley. The whole sound of their label grew and championed the electro-funk beats of the late 90s.

DIG
The excellent Hungarian label has snapped up a few tracks from Transparent Sound vault and repackaged the goods into remixes that are pure sonic heaven. With its deep, pulsating beats, Fine Cut Bodies spliced things up via an Electro Breaks version of 2 Headed Monster and a Tech House version of Electro Mouse. Error Response remix of the Cider Club is a mellow affair, but with much emotive warmth that will be loved at the chill-out corners. Pick this up when it's out on April 13.

LABEL
The name Chi comes from the ancient concept of the flow of energy which fulfills and directs life and all its forms. With music being a form of representation in the form of Chi (be it dub, ambient, breakbeat, techno, house, etc.), Chi-Recordings was founded in the year 2000 to extend opportunities to Hungarian artists and DJs to showcase their talents outside its borders.

[ Review ] White Papoo - Histoire Naturel Mixes

PhotobucketTRACKLISTING

1. Histoire Naturel (Vocals Feat. Xim & Bass)
2. Histoire Naturel (Breaks Version)

WHO

White Papoo aka Eddy is a French Nu Skool Breaks artist who produces and plays several styles of music from Trip Hop, DownTempo, Organic to Nu Skool. Having recently signed exclusively to RocStar Records, he is currently working on a full length album entitled My Island.

DIG
As you might expect from its title Historie Naturel, it's a lush, melodic roller with an emotive flute and spoken vocal snippet of Xim & Bass weaving their way through the beats. Although the tune reminds the listeners very much of those journeying movie scene, it's still a slick production that is identifiably White Papoo-flavoured liquid vibes. On the breaks version, it's an instrumental affair that lets the beats do the talking. Hunt this down when it's out on April 20th.

LABEL
Rocstar Recordings is a Breakbeat, Hip Hop and House label born out of collaboration between Lee Potter (Cut La Roc of Skint fame) and Marco Distefano (then Director Of Music for BT and part time musician).
